Hookworms are an internal parasite that suck blood in
the small intestine. They tend to live in moderately warm, moist places. Signs of hookworm
infection include: itching, diarrhea and weakness. If your vet finds that your dog is
infected he or she will prescribe medications to treat the infection.
Hookworm infection can be prevented by giving your dog a medication similar to heartworm
medication. Picking up stools from your yard and keeping the grass cut short will also
prevent infection.
